Veramoss

Symrise's proprietary oakmoss alternative. Earthy, damp, and forest-floor, developed to replace the heavily restricted natural oakmoss while preserving the character of the classic chypre accord.

IFF's trade name for methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate (methyl atrarate, CAS 4707-47-5), the same compound Givaudan sells as Evernyl, developed as an alternative to natural oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) and treemoss (Evernia furfuracea) extracts, both heavily restricted since the 1990s due to their significant sensitization potential (principal allergens: atranol and chloroatranol). Veramoss replicates the earthy, damp, forest-floor character of natural mosses in a skin-safe formulation. The compound is extensively adopted in chypre and fougère reformulations following the IFRA restrictions on natural mosses.
