Distilled from the fruit of the Peruvian pepper tree, which is no relation to black pepper. Dry, bright, and peppery, with a sweet floral lift that suits the opening of florals and woods.
Essential oil distilled from the fruit of Schinus molle, the Peruvian pepper tree, a member of the cashew family (Anacardiaceae) native to the arid Andes of Peru and ranging south into Argentina and Chile. Despite the name it is not a true pepper and is unrelated to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The oil is made up largely of monoterpene hydrocarbons, chiefly α- and β-phellandrene, limonene, myrcene, and α-pinene, in proportions that shift noticeably with where the tree is grown. Its odor is dry, bright, and peppery, with a sweet, faintly floral lift that black pepper lacks. In fine fragrance it serves as a sparkling top note, most often to open florals and woods. This grade is sold as pure and natural (P&N), wild-harvested in Peru.
