Steam-distilled essential oil from the dried seeds of Elettaria cardamomum, a perennial herbaceous plant of the Zingiberaceae family native to the wet forests of the Western Ghats in southern India, and introduced to Guatemala in the early twentieth century, which is now the larger producer. Primary constituents include 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol, ≈35%), α-terpinyl acetate (≈35%), and linalool. Exhibits a warm, spicy, camphoraceous character with sweet-balsamic undertones. Long-used in both culinary and perfumery traditions; in fine fragrance it functions as a bridge between fresh top notes and warm heart materials.
